About Us
CHECK OUT OUR NEW BLOG!We opened our doors in 1994 in downtown Saugatuck, Michigan. Our goal was always to deliver to our customers the best tasting coffee possible in a pleasant and friendly atmosphere. In addtion to providing great coffee, we offer made from scratch baked goods and an interesting and healthful food menu and juice bar.
We enjoy running our cafe, holding special events regularly featuring live music and art openings with art works created by our talented baristas and other local artists. Our baristas are a dedicated group that is continually learning to the intricacies of coffee and coffee preparation.
All of our coffees are roasted onsite at our cafe located in downtown Saugatuck. We roast carefully, in small batches, ensuring that we bring out the best in each coffee. Our coffees are globally sourced and organic and fair trade whenever possible. We offer many varietals and are always searching for the best the growers have available. Our roasters, like our baristas and bakers, are constantly learning in order to bring our customer the best product we can.
Our business continues to grow with our on-line store and wholesale accounts. We hope you visit our cafe soon, enjoy our coffee at home by visiting our on-line store, or enjoy our coffee at one of the cafes/restaurants/bed and breakfasts that serve our coffee.
Uncommon Grounds adds Douglas roasting facility!
Uncommon Grounds Coffee Roasters & Cafe of Saugatuck is opening a stand-alone coffee-roasting facililty at 2948 Blue Star Highway in Douglas. The 600-square-foot-plus facility, in the same building as the Blue Star Antique Pavilion and Saugatuck Brewing Company, will have a Probat Drum Roaster more than twice the size of the roaster used at the downtown cafe site. The new machine can roast up to 100 pounds per hour. "The cafe and roasting business have been competing for space at the cafe location," said manager Casey Boeve. "Adding a separate roasting location allows us to expand our wholesale business without sacrificing service at our cafe." "We chose the Probat because we feel it produces a superior roast," business co-owner Stephen Keye said. "It is the same make and type of roaster that we have in the cafe. We will continue to roast smaller batches at our cafe." Uncommon Grounds, in business for more than 15 years, is an increasingly well-known micro-roaster of mostly organic and fair trade coffees. It supplies custom-blended and varietal coffees to restaurants, coffee shops, bakeries and lodging establishments in southwest Michigan and Chicago, and an increasing number of accounts across the United States. The new facility is scheduled to open in January.
